The Mission43 Education Discovery Series highlights educational pathways to some of the most highly sought-after careers in Idaho for military members, veterans, and their spouses. Here we sit down with the experts on finding a path that is right for you to become a teacher in Idaho. 

Whether you’re a transitioning military member continuing to answer the call to serve, a spouse interested in a transportable career, or you’re seeking a mid-career change, a career in teaching is worth exploring now more than ever. And there are flexible options in both education and employment paths.

In Idaho, there are 116 public school districts, 66 public charter schools, 48 public magnet, 18 career technical, 124 private and parochial, 66 alternative, and 13 online and blended schools. While parent-focused, Bluum has put together an incredible resource that outlines school choices in Idaho. Not only does this help parents seeking the best school for their child, but it can be a guide for future teachers to find the right career path for their experience and goals. 

Teaching pathways without a degree

The traditional path to becoming an educator is to complete an education-focused college degree program with the approved teacher preparation curriculum. However, there are alternative pathways that can have you in the classroom this school year. 

Katie Rhodenbaugh, Evaluation and Research Program Assistant for the Non-Traditional Educator Preparation Program at College of Southern Idaho assists professionals in their transition to teaching, whether starting with an unfinished degree or a degree in something else entirely. 

Non-Traditional Educator Preparation Program

The CSI Non-Traditional Educator Preparation Program accelerates opportunities for paraprofessionals and career-changers to become certified teachers in Idaho.

“The goal of CSI’s teacher preparation program is to address Idaho’s current teacher shortage by ensuring more flexible and robust training options to support emergency hires throughout Idaho school districts, but also expanding our program to fulfill our vision of partnering with districts to proactively create and fill local teacher pipelines.”

Participants will go through 5 modules in two semesters + one summer session that covers classroom management, instructional content, professionalism, intellectual engagement and application of content, and successful learning by all students. This program is unlike any other in the state, where candidates receive individualized and consistent support through highly-skilled mentors as they progress through each module, which can be accessed online from anywhere in Idaho.

In order to be eligible, candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree and job offer (or be employed) at an Idaho district or school as a teacher, paraprofessional, or classroom aid. Members that are seeking employment in Region 4 that do not have a job offer or active role in the classroom can reach out to Katie to fill out a form that is shared with HR directors; it’s not uncommon for Directors to use this as a recruiting tool when certified applicants cannot be found.

Career Technical Education, CTE

Do you have a professional technical skill? Career Technical Education teachers in Idaho are in high demand. These educators come with valuable industry experience to prepare Idaho’s youth for high-skill and in-demand careers. 

CTE teachers are needed at a variety of schools, much like Elevate Academy, where industry meets education. Professionals with skills, experience, and/or certifications in healthcare, business, information technology, firefighting, criminal justice, and many other areas are currently needed.

Charter School Certification

Another non-traditional option in Idaho is through the Public Charter Teacher Certificate, which is a charter school-specific teaching certificate valid only for teaching at a public charter school. At a minimum, candidates must be over 18, have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and pass background check standards to be hired. 

Often, charter schools have curricula that require a different set of standards than more traditional certification records. This certification option allows for public charter schools to hire quality talent and offer on-the-job training and mentorship to meet their specific teaching needs. 

While it’s important to note that charter school-specific teaching certificates are not transferable to a traditional public school district, educated members of the military community that have a passion for teaching, are no strangers to accepting a challenge, adapting, and mastering new skills might find this path a natural fit.

In the aftermath of traumatic service, Mission43 and its partners provide key resources for mental, physical, and social recovery

When it comes to life after service, there’s no shortage of buzzwords labeling the struggles of the men and women searching for their place in the civilian world. Much attention is given to issues such as suicide, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and other mental health disorders in the military veteran community. While certainly not universal, many military servicemembers do experience significant trauma brought on by a multitude of events and experiences including combat, the threat of imminent harm, moral injuries, and sexual abuse, to name a few.

How Mission43 helps Idaho Veterans and First Responders

While education centered on post-service hardships is important, providing resources to those who are struggling is vital. There are many organizations offering support to veterans and first responders grappling with mental, physical, and substance abuse issues. However, the degree of efficacy from one program to the next can vary significantly. That’s why in 2019, Mission43 created Operation Resilient Path which affords Idahoan military veterans and first responders access to world-class recovery programs throughout the country, driven by proven results, giving those individuals the help they deserve.

Operation Resilient Path (ORP) has helped connect Idaho veterans and first responders to tangibly beneficial physical and mental health recovery programs by focusing on a variety of treatment modalities including the Hyperbaric Health and Wellness Foundation in Hailey, Idaho; the Warriors Heart in Bandera, Texas; and The Marcus Institute for Brain Health in Denver. Those who’ve embraced their recovery journey have grown and thrived as a result of these programs, including two of Mission43’s own team members. 

Recovery is not an individual journey. When our members suffer, it impacts the wellbeing of relationships, families, and our community as a whole. The ORP network helps to heal these visible and invisible wounds.

The Headstrong Project

Mission43 is dedicated to offering the best possible recovery opportunities to Idaho’s public servants and servicemembers. That’s why we have added an additional recovery program partner, The Headstrong Project.

Headstrong is a national mental health treatment practice of choice for our nation’s military, veterans, and their family members. Operating as a nonprofit, Headstrong offers confidential, barrier-free, stigma-free, evidence-based treatment approaches regardless of era of service or discharge all at no cost to those being treated.

Tony: “It starts with the people. The people here are a genuine and true reflection of the Boise spirit. The entire process from applying, interviewing, and onboarding was first class. I made a mistake on my application that would have disqualified me for consideration, however, I received a call from HR to verify the mistake and that is where it all begins. The people here care about what they do and how they do it, and we live our Values: One City, One Team-For the Greatest Good, Community Experience with “WOW”, and There’s Nothing We Can’t Do Better. The values are not catchphrases; each employee is expected to live these values in their personal and professional lives. I was welcomed to the city with open arms and it’s a workplace in which I can bring myself to work. Before starting I was asked to send a brief biography and unbeknownst to me, each department received my biography, and when I arrived people were excited to meet me in person.”

Why is the City of Boise a great place for veterans and military spouses to work?

Tony: “When I retired from the US Army in 2019, I was not ready to leave the career that I spent my entire adult life in. Due to injuries I sustained throughout my career, I could no longer be everything I expected my soldiers to be. This was a very agonizing decision, however, I set my goals to find a career in which I could contribute to the welfare of others. In March of 2020, I went to work for an organization that I believed was about serving Veterans, however, after two years I faced the reality that I was not a fit for that organization’s culture. In late 2021, I accepted the fact I needed a change and I may not be able to work for an organization in which I would have the opportunity to serve others while earning a living. Fast forward thru applying, interviewing, and accepting the offer, my military experience is valued here. The City of Boise is a great place to work because it gave me the opportunity to serve others once again. Instead of serving my nation, I’m now serving my neighbors and community. Serving the people of Boise is a rewarding experience, and the nature in which we carry out our assignments gives me a sense of making a difference the right way.”

How did you get your position at the City of Boise?

Tony: “Believing in myself. This is where Mission43 comes in. Mission43 taught me how to translate my military experience into a vernacular that civilians could not only understand but also appreciate. You must believe in you! Veterans have endured some arduous conditions and accomplished grueling missions. Don’t ever forget that. I put in the work to tailor my resume for this position and I brought myself to the interviews. Yes, I went through three rounds of interviews for the role I’m in now. Remember when you are being interviewed for a position, you are also interviewing the organization, so bring yourself to the interview do not try to be someone you are not. People will see through that.”

What tips or insights can you offer to those looking for a career with the City of Boise?

Tony: “Believe in yourself and use your network. If you are a Mission43 member, I’m in your network. Ask for an informational interview. Boise is a unique municipality and it has 13 departments, with professions from Aviation to Zoology.”

How did Mission43 help you in your job search?

 Tony: “Mission43 gave me the confidence to pursue high-level opportunities. The support I received is immeasurable. The organization equipped me with the tools and knowledge to write a resume  that appeals to employers.”

On July 9th, 2022, Mission43 and CAF-Idaho hosted the Boise Twilight Criterium Kids Ride. Over 400+ kids ranging in age from 3 to 10 years old, including adaptive athletes, showed up to complete laps on the professional race track. The event wouldn’t be possible without the help of 30 Task Force Mission43 volunteers who ensured all kids made it safely to the finish line and got paired back with their responsible adult party. The Mission43 Cybersecurity Academy

Mission43 is proud to partner with SANS Institute to establish a talent pipeline for military veterans and their spouses to obtain skills in cybersecurity that can empower a future career and improve cybersecurity for employers and communities in Idaho.

Over a period of 6 months, selected Mission43 members will have the opportunity to complete 3 GIAC certifications that provide the highest and most rigorous assurance of cybersecurity knowledge. Successful Academy participants receive a full scholarship, academic and technical mentorship, and career services valued at over $20k.

This is a multi-stage program designed to provide a reliable pathway for high-potential veterans and military spouses to enter the cybersecurity workforce.

A valued partnership with sans institute

SANS’ ongoing mission is to empower cybersecurity professionals with the practical skills and knowledge they need to make our world a safer place. SANS is the issuing body of GIAC certifications, which are the highest standard in cyber certifications.

When working with cyber employers to build a program to meet their needs, the resounding feedback was that professionals that hold GIAC certifications are amongst the most knowledgable, prepared, and respected experts in their fields. We know that there are many certifying bodies out there offering information security credentials, but SANS GIAC certifications are proven to thoroughly validate a practitioner’s abilities and likelihood of success in a real-world work environment.

The Mission43 Cybersecurity Academy isn’t just theory, it’s a path with direct correlation to employment in Idaho.

Am I Eligible?

It’s our goal to introduce new cybersecurity talent into the civilian and Federal workforce. The ideal candidate for this program is:

  • A registered Mission43 member (military member, Post-9/11 veteran, or spouse). If you are not a member yet, join today!

  • Actively seeking to transition from the military and/or committed to make a career change within the next year and plan on residing in Idaho.

  • Passionate about cybersecurity with the ability to prove aptitude.

  • A self-starter with the drive and motivation to complete coursework in an unsupervised environment within the given time window.

There is no degree requirement to be eligible to participate in this program, and it is designed for working adults that need the flexibility of attending part-time, online, with the support that you would expect from an in-person learning environment.

Mission43 will scholarship selected participants to complete 3, 8-week course blocks, designed to be completed in 6 months. 

Every participant will progress through the same first two certifications, establishing foundational knowledge and practices. From there, successful course participants will work with their advisor to identify their specialty, choosing an elective that coincides with their desired industry path and open job roles in Idaho.

Currently, the top unfilled roles include: Information security analysts, penetration testers, security engineers, information assurance managers, and vulnerability management specialists.

Throughout the 3 course blocks, you will have regular advising check-ins, learning support, and technical mentorship from SANS. You will also have access to a curated local mentorship network to set you up for follow-on career success.

Here is a description of each course block:

  • First Block - Foundations of IT and Cybersecurity (GFACT Certification): SEC275 Foundations - Computers, Technology, & Security provides exactly what you need to go from zero technical and security knowledge to a level of sufficient theoretical understanding and applied practical skills that will enable you to speak the same language as industry professionals.

  • Second Block - Core Cyber Defense Skills (GSEC Certification): SEC401 Security Essentials: Network, Endpoint, and Cloud will provide the essential information security skills and techniques you need to protect and secure your critical information and technology assets, whether on-premise or in the cloud. SEC401 will also show you how to directly apply the concepts learned into a winning defensive strategy, all in the terms of the modern adversary. This is how we fight; this is how we win!

  • Third Block - Professional Elective (choose 1 certification path)

    • GSOC Certification: SEC 450 Blue Team Fundamentals - Security Operations and Analysis designed by Security Analysts, for Security Analysts. SEC450 will get you hands-on with the tools and techniques required to stop advanced cyberattacks! Whether you are a part of a full SOC in a large organization, a small security ops group, or an MSSP responsible for protecting customers, SEC450 will teach you and your team the critical skills for understanding how to defend a modern organization.

    • GEVA Certification: SEC460 Enterprise and Cloud | Threat and Vulnerability Assessment begins with an introduction to information security vulnerability assessment fundamentals, followed by in-depth coverage of the Vulnerability Assessment Framework. It then moves into the structural components of a dynamic and iterative information security program. Through detailed practical analysis of threat intelligence, modeling, and automation, students will learn the skills necessary to not only use the tools of the trade, but also to implement a transformational security vulnerability assessment program.

    • GCED Certification: SEC501 Advanced Security Essentials - Enterprise Defender PREVENT. DETECT. RESPONSE. Effective cybersecurity is more important than ever as attacks become stealthier, have a greater financial impact, and cause broad reputational damage. This course provides a solid foundation of core policies and practices to enable individuals and security teams to defend their enterprise.

    • GCIH Certification: SEC504 Hacker Tools, Techniques, and Incident Handling helps you develop the skills to conduct incident response investigations. You will learn how to apply a dynamic incident response process to evolving cyber threats, and how to develop threat intelligence to mount effective defense strategies for cloud and on-premises platforms.

The Application Process

During open application windows, eligible Mission43 members can apply to the current cohort by visiting our events page. Applicants can expect:

  1. Fill out the initial Mission43 intake form,

  2. Connect with a Mission43 Education Specialist for a qualitative interview,

  3. If selected to proceed, take aptitude exam issued by SANS (2 hours),

  4. Final approvals and selections are made and applicants are notified of status.

Education FAQ: What is the PMP certification and am I eligible?

Top Requirements for the PMP Certification Course

Your military experience translates to project management success

The Project Management Professional (PMP) certification issued by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and is the gold standard in the project management profession. 

According to PMI, through 2027, employers will need to fill an additional 2.2 million project-oriented roles. The PMP certification validates that you are experienced in standardized concepts and skills that are applicable across a wide range of industries. By earning the PMP designation, employers recognize that you are highly skilled in:

  • People: Emphasizing the soft skills you need to effectively lead a project team in today’s changing environment.

  • Process: Reinforcing the technical aspects of successfully managing projects. 

  • Business Environment: Highlighting the connection between projects and organizational strategy.

PMP Exam Eligibility Requirements

In order to earn the PMP certification, you must complete 35 hours of formal project management training and meet certain education & experience requirements, which are: 

  • High school diploma/Associate degree with 60 months of non-overlapping project management experience within the last 8 years, or 

  • Bachelor’s degree+ with 36 months of non-overlapping project management experience within the last 8 years, or 

  • If you have graduated from a PMI GAC accredited project management degree program or have the associate level project management certification (CAPM), this can eliminate some or all of the above experience requirements.

What is a project?

Participants must be able to prove relevant project management experience in order to be accepted to sit for the PMP exam.

The good news is that project management is applicable to a wide variety of industries. PMI defines a project as a temporary endeavor, that has a definite start and finish, to create value through a unique product, service, or result. A project will have a team, budget, schedule, and a set of expectations to meet. Each project should differ from routine operations, the ongoing activities of an organization, because projects reach a conclusion once the goal is achieved.

The current exam is based on the PMBOK Guide 6th edition, which outlines project management in five process groups: Initiating (IN), planning (PL), executing (EX), monitoring and controlling (MC), and closing (CL). 

Initiating a project sets the vision of what is to be accomplished and ensures that the project aligns with an organization’s strategic mission and objectives. During this process, the sponsor (think management or authoritative body) officially authorizes the project, the project charter is created, the high-level scope is established, and stakeholders/project influencers are identified. 

The project planning phase is just that: In this phase, plans are made for how the project will be done before the work is actually started so that the team can think through the whole project process in advance. This phase takes the project scope to a granular level. Of the 5 processes, this is the most robust in terms of written document deliverables and includes items like collecting requirements, creating the work breakdown structure, developing a schedule, establishing budget, determining quality management, risk management, stakeholder engagement, and much more depending on organization requirements. 

Executing the project is getting the job done! Generally, the project manager will coordinate resources as the project team ensures deliverables defined in the planning phase are created. In project management, the term resources also includes human resources. Thus, project managers are often responsible for communications management, stakeholder engagement, and team growth and development. 

Monitoring and controlling is keeping the project on track. In a perfect world, all projects would go as planned, but that is a rarity. Instead, the project manager needs to regularly assess the overall project performance and make any necessary changes. 

Simply put, closing is the formal process of closing a project. This involves obtaining customer or sponsor acceptance, archive records, and hold a lessons learned meeting at a minimum.

Projects can include, but are certainly not limited to: Software development, improving business process(es), building construction, natural disaster relief efforts, expansion efforts, bringing on a new system or updating a system, developing training material, event planning, specific marketing campaigns, and more!

You don’t have to have had a formalized “Project Manager” job title to be eligible to sit for the PMP certification exam. Many military members and their spouses tend to have significant experience and skills in leading and directing project efforts, without having worked specifically as a project manager. 

A Project Management Institute PMP credential increases marketability and could help members of the military community showcase their skills to the civilian employment sector.

The first cohort will launch in November 2022, with applications opening July 2022. The ideal candidate to participate in the first cohort is a transitioning military member, veteran, or spouse that is active in the Mission43 community, plans to make a career change within the next year, has an aptitude and passion for the cybersecurity industry, and has little to no civilian Information Technology experience.

The cybersecurity field continues to experience a wide talent gap. Growth in opportunities have leveled nationwide but here in Idaho, an exponential increase in demand for qualified personnel persists (according to a 2020 report released by the Idaho Department of Labor).

Cyber opportunities in Idaho have grown by at least 160% since 2015, grew by 28% in 2020, and continue to rise. For transitioning service members, veterans, and their spouses interested in making a career change, right now is the perfect time to consider a career in cyber/information security.

aptitude and certifications lead to employment

With major industries like aerospace, agriculture, defense, energy, and manufacturing, Idaho is well positioned to maintain its increasing need for cybersecurity professionals. The real struggle, however, is finding the talent to fill those open positions.

Employers that would have traditionally sought out employees with college degrees are relaxing their recruiting requirements. The right combination of aptitude and professional certification(s) can open doors to entry-to-mid level positions with some of the highest earning potential currently in the market.

Whether you’re a military spouse or a transitioning military member, you know what it’s like to have to start over. Sometimes a new career field can mean a critical blow to your family finances. We’ve been there. Entry level cybersecurity salaries are trending much higher than other industries. In June 2022, the average starting salary for cybersecurity related jobs in Idaho was about $62k annually, with the majority ranging between $43k and $78k. There is unlimited potential for skills advancement and increased pay.

“I don’t know how to network.” Have you said this phrase before? If you have, you’re not alone! Many service members, veterans and military spouses struggle with the networking aspect of the job search, especially after they leave military service and no longer have direct access to military networks they’ve spent years developing. Furthermore, it can be challenging to establish a new network since many organizations have replaced events with virtual offerings. But don’t fret. Here are some pointers to help you get started.

1. What is Networking?

First, let’s define what networking is. Networking is the exchange of ideas and information among individuals, groups or organizations for the purpose of building a productive and mutually beneficial relationship. Simply put, networking is a conversation in which you develop an understanding of each other’s needs and how you can support each other.

Networking can involve many actions like reaching out to someone and asking about their job or company. Often times , the first step in networking is accomplished online via social platforms, like LinkedIn. Take the opportunity to ask questions and learn from whoever you’re speaking with – people love to talk about themselves, so let them!

2. How do I network on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is an essential networking platform, but it’s not like Facebook or Instagram. According to a recent Forbes article, 95% of recruiters and hiring managers utilize this platform to find qualified applicants and vet those they bring in for interviews. 

Linkedin Groups can be a great first step in starting a conversation with others who are interested in similar career paths. According to LinkedIn, “LinkedIn Groups provide a place for professionals in the same industry or with similar interests to share their insights and experiences, ask for guidance, and build valuable connections.” 

Mission43, in partnership with Hire Heroes USA, offers our members access to educational materials and workshops that will help you build out and improve your profile. Once you’ve set up a stellar LinkedIn profile, start joining relevant LinkedIn groups. For Junior Enlisted service members, a good starting place is the Hire Heroes USA Junior Enlisted LinkedIn Group. This group is a networking and professional development forum for all transitioning service members and veterans between the ranks of E1 and E4. It also includes hiring managers, recruiters and other advocates of the military community. You can also follow Mission43’s LinkedIn page where we share helpful information for military members and their spouses as they transition back to civilian life.

3. Free LinkedIn Premium account for Veterans

Did you know LinkedIn offers veterans and military spouses a FREE one-year subscription to LinkedIn Premium? HERE is where you can find subscription eligibility and a step-by-step guide. By registering, you can unlock several unique features, including the use of a direct InMail function to reach out to hiring managers which can improve your chances of getting in touch with someone at your company of interest. Premium users also have access to over 15,000 expert-led LinkedIn Learning courses to sharpen your skills and gain a competitive edge in the job-seeking process.

4. Attend and Maximize Virtual Events

In the pre-pandemic days, you would prepare for a career fair by dressing in your best business clothes and heading to an event venue to shake hands with future employers. In 2022, that might seem more uncommon. You are likely preparing by getting your laptop set up and double-checking your internet connection. With the rise in virtual events, you must switch up your approach to networking. Instead of bringing your business card, you should be sharing your LinkedIn profile. Here are a few tips to help guide your next virtual event or meeting:

  • Utilize the chat function to introduce yourself. Share a quick blurb about your background and your LinkedIn URL.

  • Once others start sharing their information, send them meaningful connection requests on LinkedIn. From there, you can shoot them a message to tell them you attended the XYZ event as well and would love to stay in touch in the future.

Networking can seem both ambiguous and overwhelming, especially in today’s virtual world. However, once you start putting these tips into practice, it can open many doors! In 2020 alone, the number of cybersecurity jobs in Idaho grew by 28%, and nearly every region across the state has a significant need for cybersecurity talent.

Everyone needs cybersecurity talent. MBA programs are teaching business leaders to incorporate cybersecurity into their budget. With major industries like aerospace, agriculture, defense, energy, and manufacturing, Idaho is well positioned to maintain its increasing need for cybersecurity professionals. The real struggle, however, is finding the talent to fill those open positions.

Lamb Weston is one of the world’s largest frozen potato companies, turning famous potatoes into even more famous fries. They hire across many departments in Idaho and the Pacific Northwest, offering in-person and remote positions including Information Technology project management and offensive cybersecurity.

Free Education Opportunities for Military

Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that cybersecurity is one of the fastest growing career fields in the nation, with a 0% unemployment rate and median salary upwards of $90k in Idaho.

With statistics like that, it’s understandable that careers in the cybersecurity field are highly attractive for transitioning military members and spouses. Moreover, members of the military community are often a natural fit because of their aptitude for problem solving, attention to detail, and ability to learn and adapt quickly.

If you’re thinking about a career in this field, most employers prefer at least a Bachelor’s degree, along with a number of other industry standard certifications. While the income potential is great, you may want to consider maximizing your VA education benefits, as you’ll periodically need to renew or obtain a certification. The options below are free to eligible military members, veterans, and military spouses, and can help launch a lucrative career in cybersecurity.

MISSION43 CYBERSECURITY ACADEMY WITH SANS INSTITUTE

Through a partnership with SANS Institute, one of the most prestigious cybersecurity training and certification providers in the industry, we are supporting eligible members through a series of certifications, preparing them to meet the needs of the Idaho cybersecurity job market with an estimated average entry-level salary of over $60k annually. Mission43 will provide full scholarships to selected participants. SANS reports that 90% of graduates land new jobs in cybersecurity within 6 months of program completion. It’s our goal to introduce new cybersecurity talent into the civilian and Federal workforce. The ideal candidate for this program is:

Free education options

Federal Virtual Training Environment (FedVTE) is a partnership between the Department of Homeland Security and Hire our Heroes to offer free, online cybersecurity training and certification prep courses like Security+, Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).

CyberCorps®: Scholarship for Service (SFS) Program offers cybersecurity scholarships to outstanding undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students of up to $34,000 to cover costs at a participating institution. In return for financial support, participants must agree to work for the U.S. Government, in a cybersecurity related field, for a period of time matching the length of the scholarship. In Idaho, students can attend either the University of Idaho or Idaho State University.

Cisco Veterans Cyber Scholarship Program, in partnership with CyberVetsUSA, provides free online cybersecurity training and certifications to transitioning service members, guard/reserve, veterans, and military spouses. The training is self-paced and usually takes 12-14 weeks to complete. Foundational IT/networking experience is recommended.

Onward to Opportunity is a partnership between the Institute for Veterans and Military Families and Syracuse University. O2O is a free program for transitioning military members and military spouses that offers industry standard certifications in areas like customer service, information technology, and business management. O2O courses are offered online for members in Idaho, and include some of the most sought-after certifications: CompTIA A+. Security+, CASP+, SSCP, CISSP, and many more!

Second Watch, created by Palo Alto Networks, believes that veterans have intrinsic skills needed in the cybersecurity arena. The program features 9 self-paced steps that guide you through digital learning courses, leading to free Palo Alto Networks Certified Network Security Administrator (PCNSA) and Palo Alto Networks Certified Cybersecurity (PCCSA) exams. Veterans can also take free courses leading to the (paid) Palo Alto Networks Certified Security Engineer (PCNSE) exam.

SANS VetSuccess Immersion Academy: If you already have a degree and/or some experience in information technology, information security, or audit from military service, this free SANS immersion might be right for you. Eligible transitioning service members and active duty spouses can complete up to three SANS courses and industry-leading certifications. Candidates must meet Academy requirements and submit an application, online assessment, and personal interview.

Skills gap in Idaho

The options above are great resources for all skill levels, but especially for those looking to stack their skills for marketability. Taking advantage of one or more of these opportunities can lead to a promising career in a short amount of time, as there is currently a high need for web and Java developers in Idaho and not enough graduates to fill open job positions.

If you’re new to the information security/cybersecurity field, it’s a good idea to establish your career goals and build your education plan accordingly. Local tech recruiters suggest that having a Bachelor’s degree in computer science can not only open more employment doors, but also lead to a $10+ an hour wage increase.
